What does a TMFA do?
As a TMFA, you will not only be involved in animal care, but also take on a wide range of exciting tasks. You will:
- Assist with examinations, surgeries, and anaesthesia
- Carry out laboratory work
- Welcome and support pet owners
- Care for inpatients
How does the apprenticeship work?
- Duration: The apprenticeship to become a Veterinary Nurse lasts 3 years.
- Format: Dual apprenticeship in a veterinary practice and at a vocational school.
- Interim exam: At the end of the 2nd year of training.
- Final exam: At the end of the 3rd year of training.
- After completion: After passing the exams, you will officially start your career as a Veterinary Nurse.

Your path to becoming a TMFA:
With a higher education entrance qualification (Fachhochschulreife), you can shorten the apprenticeship by six months. The requirement is at least an intermediate school-leaving certificate (Realschulabschluss).
